A Case Study of Seagate ST16000NM001G Data Recovery

We had another Seagate helium-filled hard drive data recovery case, and at HDDSurgery, we continue to work at the same pace!

In the event of a hard drive firmware failure, prompt action is crucial to minimize data loss and restore functionality. Recently, our company encountered such a situation when we received a Seagate ST16000NM001G hard drive with a firmware problem. In this blog post, we'll walk you through the steps we took to address the issue and successfully recover the data.

Identifying the Problem

Upon receiving the Seagate ST16000NM001G hard drive, we diagnosed the firmware problem, which prevented access to the data stored on the drive.

Steps Taken for Data Recovery

1. Unlocking the Firmware and Gaining ATA Access:

Our first step was to unlock the firmware of the hard drive to gain ATA access. This allowed us to communicate with the drive and initiate the recovery process.

2. Exploring the Firmware:

Upon accessing the firmware, we discovered three copies of the SYS file, a crucial component of the drive's operating system.

3. Regenerating Module 2B:

Our examination revealed that the translator was damaged, specifically experiencing a failure on module 2B (SYS file 28). To address the damaged translator, we initiated the regeneration of module 2B. This involved repairing the faulty component and restoring its functionality within the firmware.

4. Successful Firmware Repair:

With module 2B regenerated, we were able to repair the firmware of this Seagate ST16000NM001G hard drive. With the translator fixed and all necessary components restored to working order, the firmware was successfully repaired.
